As we all know, NSW has been hit with a lockdown since Saturday the 26th of June, and evidently so has UNSW. With classes having been online for Week 5—hopefully resuming face-to-face after Week 7 when everyone will be reading this article—we as a society have also had to go online in terms of how we operate and communicate with one another.

Though this is the least of the state and country’s concerns at the moment, it is still a significant segue and abrupt change to our way of learning as well as how we socialise with others. While we have had to deal with inconvenient demands to do the laundry while in the middle of a Zoom call, that’s the least of our concerns when group assignments are amidst as well as lost time interacting with tutors and classmates. Personally, lunches with friends at Guzman Y Gomez and trying (keyword: trying) to study in CATS rooms have never been more missed than now.

However, speaking specifically from the perspective of a psychology student, it has been difficult to regain a sense of stability considering all of my classes thus far have been online, including my tutorials. As a result, although I’ve gotten pretty used to the Microsoft Teams interface, I haven’t had the privilege of sitting in a room with other psychology students at all this year. With another group assignment coming up and with no certainty of whether NSW be lifted out of lockdown by the 17th of July, this is my one worry out of presumably many more of the term.

Facing another lockdown, I thought I’d know what I’d like to be doing during these dire times given I’ve been through a similar experience a year ago, yet I’m still confronted with this feeling of uncertainty with what my life will be like at home. Adjusting hasn’t been the hardest thing for me with lectures, tutorials, and labs being online since Term 1 2019, however the one thing that I struggle coming to terms with is not being able to see my friends. The adversity I face is not the fear of my grades plummeting, but rather the deterioration of my social life. Yes, I’m able to talk to friends online and meet new students through online classes, but nothing can replace the feeling you get when you’re with them in real life.

I think for people like me who enjoy spending quality time with friends and family, this second lockdown is a great lesson about being grateful for all the literal seconds you have with the people you care about, and how they should never go to waste, because the fact is you’ll truly never know when’s the next time you’ll see them.

These are only our thoughts on NSW’s lockdown following the escalation of the COVID-19 situation, however we’d also love to hear yours! We’ve linked a form where you can express your thoughts and feelings on the current lockdown and we’ll talk about it more in the next release of PRISM. Looking forward to hearing from you all!

As we all know, the COVID-19 climate in NSW is looking pretty grim. Whether you’re at home bored or caught up in university life, we’ve got some ideas that will surely improve your life in isolation!

Learn a New Skill

All that time browsing social media during quarantine shows that you also have enough time to learn new skills! Learning anything new can be gruelling, boring and at many times you may feel unmotivated to even continue, but it’s a long-term investment you can make which will most likely be beneficial for you in the future. Motivation doesn’t necessarily have to be the catalyst to action, try to take action first in learning new skills you’re interested in such as playing an instrument, developing a website, or even cooking. Start with small ambitions if necessary, and let that inspire you to build towards greater goals!

Read

To prevent the brain fog you experience when you’re feeling lazy and unproductive, a nice way to clear and stimulate your mind is through reading. From novels to self-help books, engage in some thoughtful pieces of writing that can bring new perspectives and insight into your quarantine life. As said before, the hardest part is to start reading, but taking action and trying to read will undoubtedly lighten up life in isolation.

Exercise

In quarantine, it is essential that you strive to maintain our physical and emotional wellbeing through including physical activity regularly in our daily routine. With COVID-19 restrictions ramping up once again due to recent cases, it is uncertain whether gyms and recreational facilities will remain open in the foreseeable future. Being at home is a prime opportunity to flex your creative muscles to stay fit whether it be doing pushups, squats, creating our own weights using items around the house. Though exercise is very important,  it should be noted that programmes should be implemented realistically to suit your lifestyle and goals so they can be done on a consistent basis.

Self Care

In addition to keeping active, we must foster a growth mindset by making an effort to go beyond our comfort zone. Take some time to yourself and reflect on the past month, were there any situations where you felt overwhelmed by work or struggled with certain aspects of the task you were completing?

Ask yourself questions like:

  • What led to these negative emotions?

  • How could I prepare in the future to prevent the same reaction?

Note down these responses, so you are better armed to handle these unfavourable situations in the future. Ensure you make time to do the things you enjoy and take care!
