This is the final newsletter from the 2022 IT/Publications team, and we wanted to showcase our team who’ve put in their hearts and souls to make our fortnightly newsletter publication possible. We hope you have learned something and have loved reading them as much as we have liked writing and making them, from science news to SCISOC reports and fun corners. It's been a pleasure, and we sincerely hope that SCISOC Prism has improved your fortnights, even a little bit!

Hilary

The driving menace and lightweight of the portfolio, Hilary, has been the VP we’ve always needed. Her dedication and perseverance has ensured that all projects run smoothly, but that also means she has a reputation-ruining album of photos up her sleeve should she choose to publicly embarrass us. Despite this, her compassion makes it easy to open up to her, and she always does everything she can to make things easy for us. Having said this, it’s hard looking for her at a rave or club, as her hair lets her disappear immediately and camouflage comfortably into her surroundings. Jokes aside, Hilary is the most hard-working and reliable person who always brings energy to the table, and we have all loved and appreciated the year we’ve spent with her. Just maybe don’t let her pick up any small dogs.

Bud

One of the more easy going directors, IT/Pubs  would not have been what it is without this man. Bud has always been there for us whenever we were stuck on Webflow, patiently teaching us new things and helping us solve issues. His lovable and goofy personality is embodied by moments like screaming on a roller coaster before the drop, chundering on the streets after WAO, falling on his ass during a shoulder ride, passing out on the road at retreat, or his endless album of weird facial expressions. Bud has had a major impact on the development of SCISOC’s website through his countless efforts, while also being one of most fun people to be around regardless of setting.

Christian

Completing the other half of the IT/Pubs couple with Bud and our next VPI for 2023 is Christian! Probably the chillest guy in our portfolio, Christian is always looking out for others, providing help and absolutely making the vibe online and in person. Besides being a heavy contributor to the creation and development of the SCISOC website, he is also a heavy contributor for us staying for “just one more song” at the club until next thing you know, it’s closed. Regardless of us not getting the sleep we wanted for the next day, we still love him for all his cheeky quirks, hilarious photos of himself and his funny moments. It has always been a pleasure having Christian, whether it was providing us with photo roulette premium to play 100 rounds or guiding us through sticky situations in Webflow and we look forward to what he will bring to SCISOC in 2023.

Hayley

Though small in stature, Hayley Vuong has the generosity of a heart larger than life, showering her beloved subcommittee with unconditional kindness and guidance. When she is not enlightening her Instagram following with mini weekly shopping hauls, she is offering constructive and positive feedback to her subcommittee, patiently correcting punctuation and spelling mistakes and evaluating whole paragraphs of work while offering her valuable assistance on our publications. We are beyond grateful to Hayley for her contribution and commitment to the team, and her willingness to step up and encourage us does not go unnoticed! With an optimism and energy that is immeasurably contagious, we thank Hayley for bringing positivity and for always going above and beyond!

Helena
Helena and her cats, Mochi and Mango. That’s right. If you haven’t heard, Helena is a mother to 2 of the most adorable cats in the world. With the most squeezable faces, they will most definitely win you over making it impossible to focus in any of the meetings. However, Helena brings much more to IT Pubs than the kittens. Helena is one of the crucial driving forces behind all our publications and newsletters, constantly ensuring only the best and most creative are produced. She is always quick to help and there is never a problem that she can’t tackle. Helena has been a lovely director and we couldn’t have asked for any better.

Andrew

Andrew Gu may appear as the culturally carved out LB (little boy) with which the Young Asian Australian Community has bestowed upon extroverted gym-loving males. When he is not at Trination Fitness Hurstville, he is attending our weekly Discord meetings also unfortunately at Trination Fitness Hurstville. However, having written over 50% of our Science Reports, Andrew remains a committed and devoted subcommittee member, with multiple engaging and innovative publications and webflow operations. His pioneering works include a brilliant informative report titled “Breakfast Around the World” and an enlightening article on ‘How to Build a PC’ informing readers of the necessary steps to building a personal computer. All in all, Andrew has accomplished a voluptuous amount of tasks, though not as voluptuous as his curly permed hair swept voluptuously to the side like the rhythmic waves of a hardstyle beat, and we are truly grateful for his efforts!

Brian

Our unofficial grandpa of the IT/Pubs portfolio, and the initiator of attending the weekly meetings during the post work gym session. When he’s not leaning on the walls of the club waiting for the end of Christians “just one more” requests or walking the IT/Pubs dogs, admiring the landscapes of bicentennial park, he’s busy making bank and being the overall hardworking man that we all love and appreciate. Even though Brian is a busy busy guy, he still makes time to deliver quality work and is behind the pieces that are not only comedic but also informative such as “The art of procrastination”, providing insight on why and how we procrastinate. He is also the whiz behind the new webpage feature, the messenger chatbox, thus displaying the incredible quality of his work, whether it be in Publications or IT, we truly appreciate all the hard work he has put into this portfolio and all his endeavors!

Christine

Christine is an energetic and scary individual who never hesitates to point out your choice of fashion. Her creativity and initiative has allowed her to develop numerous reasons to visit her native habitat: the clubs throughout Sydney. Her indulgence in clubbing has since crippled her immune system and probably removed a decade from her lifespan, yet her continuous presence has proved her tenacity and perseverance. Christine always tries to the best of her abilities and produces work to a high standard, seen through her consistent contributions to SCISOC report and her quality work on the Contact Us page on our website. Her innate ability to not hold back has allowed her to dish insults at a level never seen before. Nevertheless, it has been a pleasure working with Christine, and her unparalleled energy and enthusiasm is definitely an asset to our team.

James

An expert in all Mario party games while also having one of the largest COC’s, James calls himself a heavyweight yet always finds a way to chunder. Everywhere you go you’re bound to find him, whether it be uni, WAO, Puzzle, Knockout or uni (it is mentioned  twice for a reason). Despite his never-ending schedule, this man always finds time to hang out with IT/Pubs and be a vibe. That is except for the time he arrived an hour late to a birthday dinner because he took the wrong bus, or that time he completely forgot about SCISOC graduation. Regardless, James has had invaluable contributions to IT/Pubs, whether it be writing newsletters such as the “James Webb Telescope” and the one where he reviews horror movies he’s watched, implementing dark mode on the SCISOC website, or just hanging around with everyone.

Kevin

Kevin, IT Publication’s beloved tallest with the biggest heart. Those may find that he resembles the childhood favourite Iron Giant, always ready to lend a helping hand. With his everlasting and growing knowledge of computer science there is never a doubt that there is a webflow task too difficult for him. For example, the new ‘About Us’ page for the Scisoc website was imagined and designed in that big brain of his. Not only is he a webflow genius but when it comes to publications and newsletters, his creativity is endless. With notable articles like “The science behind our artist’s mind” and his upcoming piece in the publication that delves into the “Importance of Multinational Collaboration”.  It has been a pleasure to have Kevin as fellow subcom and nothing ever beats the classic Kevin squat.

Peggy

As the initiator of the COC craze in SCISOC, Peggy is the true heavyweight of SCISOC with us never seeing her drunk apart from one time … which we don’t talk about. While she definitely gives off mum vibes, she also manages to let out her wild self from time to time whether its being so excited about “interesting” things or getting cuffed on roadtrip (It’s safe to say that this wouldn’t have happened without SCISOC retreat). Despite being away half the time when working on newsletter or Webflow, Peggy always finds a way to provide contributions to make further progress in our work. All jokes aside, we appreciate Peggy for not only the work she has put into publications and the SCISOC website, but also adding to the amazing vibe of IT/Pubs.

Nobel Prize Winners for their Contribution to Quantum Information Science

Three quantum information scientists have jointly won this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics for their contribution to quantum mechanics and quantum information science. Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger were awarded for their significant experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science. With broad and fundamental implications in various fields such as secure information transfer, quantum computing and sensing technology, the Nobel Committee recognised the laureates for their pioneering work which “have opened doors to another world, shaking the very foundations of how we interpret measurements.”

The scientists’ work have collectively addressed core enigmas in the fundamental nature of reality. Could it be, as Einstein proposed, that all objects possess fundamental properties that can be discerned through precise observation? In independent work, each of the three researchers forged new experiments investigating quantum entanglement, the phenomenon in which two or more particles exist in an entangled state, whereby any action taken on one of the particles can instantaneously ripple through the entire entangled assemblage, to the extent where if an observer determined the state of one particle, its entangled counterparts would instantly reflect such state, whether they are in the same room as the observer or in a galaxy on the opposite side of the universe.

In 1964, a physicist from Northern Ireland, John Bell, made an important breakthrough where he devised a theoretical test to show the “hidden variables”–forces or laws that we couldn’t see–which Einstein ignored and was convinced didn’t exist.

Imagine a light bulb that emits two photons (light particles) that travel in opposite directions away from it. If these photons are entangled, then they can share a property, such as their polarisation, no matter their distance. Bell imagined doing experiments on these two photons separately and comparing the results of them to prove that they were entangled (truly and mysteriously linked).

Clauser put Bell’s theory into practice and in 1972, just eight years after Bell’s famous thought experiment, Clauser showed that light could indeed be entangled. However, Aspect was the first to challenge the loopholes in Bell’s test, as Clauser’s results could be explained without entanglement.

Aspect devised an experiment to reveal that the entangled photons in the experiment weren’t communicating with each other through hidden variables to decide the outcome of Bell’s test.

Furthermore, Zeilinger’s work paved the way for the quantum technological revolution by showing how it was possible to link a series of entangled systems together, thus building the quantum equivalent of a network.

Understanding quantum mechanics allows us to build devices, which may drive the next revolution of quantum technology. Quantum entanglement can be harnessed in computing to process information in ways that were not possible before. Detecting small changes in entanglement can allow sensors to detect things with greater precision than ever before. Communicating with entangled light can also guarantee security, as measurements of quantum systems can reveal the presence of the eavesdropper. In 2022, we have the first quantum computers, and the Micius satellite uses entanglement to enable secure communications across the world.

Email Image

Their works provide the practical theoretical method and conclusive experimental measurements that underlie the distinction between the quantum and classical words, showing that quantum objects can be related through entanglement in a way that is not possible with classical objects, modifying our view of the nature of reality in the universe.
